Barlas Beach: Rocks, Caves and a Shipwreck in Messinia

Just a few kilometres south of Marathopoli, near Gargalianoi, lies a small but distinctive beach on the western coast of Messinia. Barlas Beach combines sand, pebbles and impressive rock formations, while in recent years another unusual feature has become part of the landscape: a shipwreck resting on the rocks beside the shore.

A Small Beach Hidden Below the Road

When you arrive at Barlas, the beach itself is almost completely hidden from the road where you leave your car. Walk just a few metres down towards the sea, and the distinctive landscape suddenly comes into view.

Large rocks shaped by the sea surround the small beach, forming cavities, natural shelters and a striking opening through the rock towards the sea. In several spots, the rocks provide natural shade where you can sit or lie down without needing a beach umbrella.

The beach itself is very small. To enjoy it at its best, try to avoid the busiest times and days, especially during the summer months.

The Barlas Shipwreck

The shipwreck on the rocks beside Barlas Beach

In November 2023, a vessel was found stranded on the rocks beside the beach. It is believed to have been abandoned at sea by migrant smugglers, although no further information became available about the circumstances that brought it there.

The vessel remains on the rocks and has since become part of the distinctive landscape of the area, attracting particular interest from photographers.

How to Get There

Barlas Beach is about 4 kilometres from Marathopoli and 5 kilometres from Gargalianoi.

From Marathopoli, follow the road towards Pylos. After about 3 kilometres, turn right towards Barlas. The road leads to the small coastal settlement and to a spot above the beach where you can leave your car.

From there, it is only a very short walk down to the beach, with an elevation difference of about ten metres.

What to Know Before You Go

Barlas is not an organised beach, so it is a good idea to bring whatever you may need with you. During the summer months, there is a seasonal place directly above the beach where you can get coffee and simple cold dishes, as well as accommodation.

There are holiday homes and other accommodation options in the surrounding area, while nearby Marathopoli has plenty of places to eat and have a coffee. Along the coast towards Pylos, you will also find several other beaches that can easily be combined with a visit to Barlas.
