In the shallow waters off Divari Beach, also known as Golden Beach, near Gialova, lies the wreck of the cargo ship Ramona. The remains of the vessel are still clearly visible close to the shore, with parts of the wreck rising slightly above the surface of the water.

The story of the Ramona
The Ramona was a Maltese-flagged cargo ship under Egyptian ownership. In 1983, while sailing from Egypt to Greece, it suffered mechanical failure and was towed into Navarino Bay, where it anchored. The vessel was later abandoned and, around three years later, strong winds drove it into the shallow waters of Gialova, where it ran aground.

According to its cargo documents, the ship was carrying 573 tonnes of aluminium sulphate packed in sacks. Years later, when remains of the cargo were found inside the wreck, samples were taken and analysed by the relevant authorities. The results announced at the time did not indicate a pollution problem in the surrounding marine area.
How to reach the shipwreck

From the Marathopoli–Gialova road, shortly before reaching Gialova, follow the signs towards Divari – Golden Beach. Pass Erodios Camping and continue along the coastal road, keeping the sea beside you.
At the point where the paved road ends and the dirt road begins, you can leave the car and walk down to the beach. The wreck lies directly offshore in shallow water and is easy to spot from the coast.
The area around the shipwreck

Divari lies in a distinctive part of Navarino Bay. On one side of the road is the beach, while on the other stretches the Gialova Lagoon, an important wetland and stopping point for migratory birds. Across the bay you can see Pylos and the island of Sphacteria, while Voidokilia Beach and Palaiokastro are only a short distance away.

A visit to the shipwreck can easily be combined with swimming at Divari or Voidokilia, birdwatching at Gialova Lagoon depending on the season, cycling in the area, or a hike up to Palaiokastro.
