Kalamaris Waterfall: a short escape near Gialova

Just a few kilometres from Gialova, hidden among dense vegetation, lies Kalamaris Waterfall. It is a beautiful and relatively little-known spot in Messinia that can be visited without a long hike and easily combined with a day exploring the wider Pylos and Gialova area.

The waterfall is approximately 20 metres high, with the water forming a small, shallow pool at its base. The surrounding landscape is lush and green, creating a striking contrast with the olive groves that dominate the wider area.

How to get there

Driving along the Marathopoli–Pylos road towards Gialova, you will reach the junction for Divari Beach (Golden Beach). At this point, take the road in the opposite direction, following the signs towards Schinolakka.

After a short stretch of paved country road, the route continues along a dirt road through olive groves. The dirt road is suitable for a regular car, although the usual care required when driving on unpaved roads is advisable. At the end of the road, leave your car and continue on foot.

The trail is narrow and passes through dense vegetation. There are a few short uphill and downhill sections, but the walk is brief: it takes around 10–15 minutes to reach the waterfall.

When to visit

The best time to see Kalamaris Waterfall with a good flow of water is from winter through spring and into early summer. Spring is particularly beautiful, when the combination of flowing water and lush vegetation transforms the surroundings.

From May onwards, the flow gradually begins to decrease. Depending on how much rain has fallen during the preceding months, the waterfall may have no water at all during the summer, particularly in July and August.

A visit does not require much time. It makes an easy short detour for anyone staying in Gialova, Pylos or Marathopoli and can easily be combined with a swim at Divari Beach or a day exploring the surrounding area.

Half an hour or an hour beside the water, surrounded by shade and vegetation, is enough to completely change the pace of the day.
