Located between Filiatra and Marathopoli, about 4 km from the latter, Lagouvardos is a long sandy beach stretching for around two kilometres. It is easily accessible from the coastal road and offers open views across the Ionian Sea towards the island of Proti.

The beach is particularly popular with surfers and windsurfers. Its exposure to the open Ionian Sea makes it receptive to westerly and southwesterly swells, and during the winter months it is one of the best-known surfing spots in the western Peloponnese.
In summer, Lagouvardos attracts plenty of visitors for swimming, while seasonal beach bars usually operate along the shore and lifeguard cover is normally provided. Extra care is needed when the sea is rough, however. Strong rip currents and powerful waves can develop along the beach, so swimmers should always pay attention to sea conditions and follow any instructions given by the lifeguards.

An important nesting beach for Caretta caretta
Lagouvardos is also a nesting beach for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). ARCHELON has recorded and protected nests in the area, while measures have also been taken in the past to reduce light pollution, which can disorient hatchlings as they make their way towards the sea.

During the nesting and hatching season, visitors should take particular care around marked nests and avoid activities that could disturb them.
Lagouvardos River and the surrounding area
The Lagouvardos River reaches the Ionian Sea at the northern part of the beach. On the same side of the beach stands the small church of Agiannakis, while the Lagouvardos Gorge can also be found in the wider area.

Several accommodation options are located just behind the beach, along the road, for those who want to stay close to the sea. Marathopoli is only a few minutes to the south and offers a wider choice of places to stay and eat.
There is also a scenic coastal walking route from Marathopoli to Lagouvardos, following mostly dirt roads close to the sea. It is an easy way to explore this stretch of coastline on foot.
